7- Payman Meskin Khoda, member of the Islamic Association of the
Students of the Razi University of Kermanshah, was released from the
Diesel-abad prison, by the order of the judge of the 7th Branch of
the Prosecution Dept. of Kermanshah with a 10-million-Touman bail order. This
Member of the General Council of the Unity Strengthening Office, had been
arrested by the agents of the Information Dept. of the Kermanshah Revolutionary
Guards Army ( Sepah-e-Pasdaran) in
Students: Sentences issued by Courts
8- According to Siavash Khoda-shenas, the Secretary of the Islamic Association of the Students of the Mazandaran University ”13 members of the Islamic Association of the Students of this University, have been sentenced to verbal and written reprimands by the disciplinary committee.(ILNA 2006/8/2)
9- Seven Arab students, of the Chamran University of Ahwaz, have been sentenced to punishments from 11 to 17 years prison, by the primary court and the endorsement of the Assessment Branch of the Supreme Court of Iran due to publishing a publication titled : ”Aghlam-ol-Talabeh”.(ISNA 2006/8/2)
10- Mehdi Shirzad, a student of the
Prevention of Activities of Student Groups
11- The senior Directors of the Amir Kabir University, supported by the Chancelor and representative of the Supreme Leader Foundation in the University, attacked the Office of the Islamic Association of the Students, destructed the building and the properties of the Association. Destruction operations took place in the presence of the information, security and disciplinary forces. (The Amir Kabir Newsletter 2006/7/31)
The Press: Suppressions
12- The internet newspaper called “Iran-e-Ma”, published by the Chief Editor Bijan Saf-sari, was filtered by the Filtering Committee, by the order of the Information Ministry for the charge of hostility against the Islamic Republic.(Iran-e-Ma 2006/8/6).
13- The publication licenses of the quarterly ”Kaziouh”, published by Chief Editor Alireza Heshmati, and the monthly “Leylakh”, published by the Editor Hamid Salimi, were revoked by the Board of Supervision over the Press of the Department of Culture and Islamic Guidance of the Kurdistan Province for the charge of delay in publication.(Mookerian Web Log 2006/8/9)
14- After the spread
of the news of the nomination of Ali Kheir-andish the husband of the sister of
Hashemi Samareh (the Senior Adviser to the President as the Responsible
Authority of the 100 Milliard Dollar contract for gas export to China) the
“Aref News” site was filtered by the Ministry of Communications and Technology,
at the instruction of Hashemi Samareh. (Aref News 2006/8/21)
The Press: Firing of Journalists
15-Following a change in the management cadre of the Public
Relations in the City of Tehran and transfer of the news site “Sama “ to the
“Mehr” News Agency, 4 journalists and one photographer were fired. (Akhbar-e-Rooz 2006/8/8)
16- Mohammad Hassan Malek Mohammadi, the former Responsible Editor of the daily “Hamshahry” was summoned for trial, by the Branch No.1083 of the Tehran General Court, because of a complaint filed by the District Attorney, for the following charges: distribution of lies for the purpose of disturbing the minds of the public, publication of untrue materials. 17- The Responsible Editors of the following periodicals: “Film va Cinema”, “Towlid va Masraf” “Tak” and “Dam-pezeshk”, were summoned for trial, by the Branch No. 76 of the Criminal Court of the Tehran Province, for the following charges: distribution of lies for the purpose of disturbing the minds of the public, publication of untrue materials and use of people in pictures.(ILNA 2006/8/16).
The Press: Interrogation of Journalists
18- Morteza Fallah Meibodi, the Responsible Editor of the suppressed daily “Eghbal”, was interrogated at the Branch No.5 of the Government Employees Courthouse and freed on a 500 million Rials bail order for the following charges: publication of untrue materials, distribution of lies for the purpose of disturbing the minds of the public, propagation against the regime, and publication of the political positions of Mostafa Mo’in, Mohammad Reza Khatami, and Mohsen Armin as well as the news of Akbar Ganji’s hunger strike in prison.(ILNA 2006/8/1)
19- Fatemeh Kamali Ahmad Sarabi, the Responsible Editor of the license-revoked monthly “Jame’e Now” was tried by the Branch No. 1083 of the Criminal Court of the Province of Tehran, presided by Judge Hossein Hosseinian, due to a complaint filed by the District Attorney, for the following charges: propagation against the regime, insulting the sanctities and the religious beliefs of the public, publication of untrue materials, promotion of prostitution and religiously-forbidden deeds, publication of obscene materials, failure to publish the periodical in an orderly manner and imitation of the name or logo of another publication.(ILNA 2006/7/23).
20- Ejlal Ghavami and Sa’id Sa’edi, Sanandaj journalists, were tried by the first branch of the Revolution Court of Sanandaj, because of participation in the sit-in across the Kurdistan Provincial Government Office on the charge of insulting the authorities.(ISNA 2006/7/24).
21- Ali Salehabadi, the Responsible Editor of the daily ”Hambastegi” was tried by the Branch No. 76 of the Criminal Court of the Province of Tehran, presided by Judge Mohammad Reza Saremi, on the following charges: insult, distribution of lies for the purpose of disturbing the minds of the public, because of the complaints filed by, the District Attorney, the City of Tehran, the Security of the Information (Dept.) of the Disciplinary Force and Mehdi Koochekzadeh, the Tehran Representative in the Islamic Consultative Assembly (The Majles). 22- Ali Asghar Ja’fari, the Responsible Editor of the daily ”Jam-e-Jam” was tried by the Branch No. 76 of the Criminal Court of the Province of Tehran, presided by Judge Mohammad Reza Saremi, on the charge of publication of untrue materials, due to complaints filed by the Mahshahr City Council and Ali Soofi, former Minister of Cooperation. 23- Lotfollah Meissami, the Responsible Editor of the bimonthly ”Chashm-andaz-e-Iran” was tried by the Branch No. 76 of the Criminal Court of the Province of Tehran, presided by Judge Mohammad Reza Saremi, on the following charges: propagation against the regime, publication of untrue materials, slanders about the Disciplinary Force, publication of materials against the constitution, promotion of materials harming the foundations of the regime, and publication of blasphemous and anti-regime materials following a complaint filed by the District Attorney. 24- The Cartoonist and the Responsible Editor of
the weekly “Nassim” (Breeze) of Bojnord, were tried by the Press Court of the
Province, due to complaints filed by the Bassij (militia) section of the

“Akhbar”, and “Akhbar-e-Eghtesad” was tried by the Branch No. 1083 of the
Criminal Court of the
26- Abdul-mohammad Zahedi, the Responsible Editor of the periodical
“Avay-e Kermanshah”, was tried by the Branch No. 1083 of the Criminal Court of
the Province of Tehran, presided by Judge Hossein Hosseinian, due to a complaint
filed by Isma’il Tatari, the former Representative of Kermanshah in the Islamic Consultative Assembly (The Majles) and “Ansar-e-Hezbollah”.(ILNA2006/8/20)
The Press: Sentences issued by the Courts
27- Abolfazl Vessali, the Chief Editor of the suppressed
daily”Neday-e-Azarabadegan”, was sentenced to 6 months punitive prison by the
Branch of the Press Court of the Eastern Azerbaijan, due to a complaint by the
District Attorney for the charge of propagation and instigation of the people
to revolt and the publication License of the ”Neday-e-Azarabadegan” was
revoked. He was arrested in the course of the popular protests of
28- Saghi Bagheri-nia, the
Editor chef of the suppressed daily ”Asia” was sentenced to 6 months
punitive prison by the Branch No.76 of the Criminal Court of the Tehran
Province, endorsed by the Branch No.27 of the Supreme Court of Iran, for the
following charges: propagation for anti-regime groups and promotion of
materials harming the regime. The daily “
29- The site of “the Centre for Defending Children’s Rights” was
filtered by the Filtering Committee following the instruction of the Security
Authorities. This Centre was established in the year 1378 (1999/2000) and
started activity in the month of Esfand, 1382 (February 20 through
30- Fo’ad Sadeghi, the former Responsible Editor of the site ”Baztab”, was sentenced to 91 days punitive prison, by the Branch No. 1060 of the Tehran General Court, presided by Judge Hossein Mohammadkhani, because of a complaint filed by Ali Sa’idlou, the Executive Assistant of the President, for insult and disrespect. 31- Mehdi Rahmanian, the Responsible Editor of the daily”Shargh” should be replaced within a month by the order of the Board of Supervision of the Press for the following charges: publication of blasphemous materials, publication of materials incompatible with the approvals of the High Security Council, publication of matters which cause conflicts including insults to religious, political and national personalities and receiving over 70 notices and warnings. 32- Alireza Khosh-andam, the responsible Editor of the periodical “Ravan-Shenasi-e-Jame’e, was sentenced to one year suspended prison by the Branch No. 76 of the Criminal Court of the Tehran Province, presided by Judge Mohammad Reza Saremi, for the following charges: promotion of the religiously forbidden deeds and publication of obscene materials. 33- The publication license of the suppressed monthly “Karnameh”,
published under the direction of Negar Iskandarfar as the Responsible Editor,
was revoked in the Branch 76 of the
Criminal Court of the
34- Zahra Amiri, the Responsible Editor of the periodical “Cinema Family”, was sentenced to payment of 1,000,000 Rials, as cash punishment, in the Branch No.76 of the Criminal Court of the Tehran Province, presided by Judge Mohammad Reza Saremi, for the charge of using persons as a tool in pictures on the complaints filed by the District Attorney and the Press and Propaganda Assistant to the Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance (ILNA 2006/8/15).
35- Shokouh Jiroudi, the Responsible Editor of the periodical
“Naghsh Afarinan”, was sentenced to payment of 5,000,000 Rials, as cash
punishment, in the Branch No.76 of the Criminal Court of the
36- Abdul Fattah Soltani, Member of “Defense of Human Rights Center
– DHRC”, who is sentenced to 5 years punitive prison, said: “ I believe, my sin
as a whole is why I have accepted to defend political, press and student cases
and two of the nuclear suspects. They want to treat me in a manner so that no
lawyer would dare interfere in political cases. In this case, also, this severe
sentence has been issued for my beliefs, my opinion expression and my defending

37- Hossein Saffar Harandi, the Minister of Culture & Islamic Guidance, is quoted saying: “The Board of Supervision over the Press” has declared “The Islamic Iran Participation Front” ineligible to have a publication. (ILNA 2006/7/26).
38- Akbar A’lami, the Tabriz Representative in the Islamic Consultative Assembly (The Majles) is quoted saying “A visit of the Cell No.209 of the Evin prison, accompanied by 4 other Majles Representatives did not become possible. In the Cell No. 209, political prisoners are held and the Ministry of Information is in charge of the cell. (ILNA 2006/7/30).
39- The activity of “Defense of Human Rights Center – DHRC”, was declared illegal by the Commission of Clause 10 of the Parties and Groups Act, in the Ministry of the Interior, and it was mentioned that the centre would be prosecuted judicially in case of continuing to be active. (ISNA 2006/8/2).
40- Seyyed Ali Salehi, a Member of “Iranian Writers' Association” is quoted saying “In the recent 27 years of operation of the Book Audit Section, no period has been as hateful as this one; The Book Audit Section in the Ministry of Guidance has turned it to a store of books. I know publishers who have spent all their savings on books and the fruits of all their efforts, in the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, have been taken hostage by time. (ILNA 2006/8/5)
41- Threatened by the Security Forces, the speech of Abdulkarim Soroush in the “Religion & Modernity” seminar, in the Irshad Hosseinieh, was cancelled. (Advar News 2006/8/17)
42- “The Iranian Writers Center” issued a statement to declare” Stopping the publication of books and periodicals, filtering of websites and introduction of censure in various fields of theatre and play grows stronger and harder daily.” It was included in another section of the statement: “This anti-cultural policy causes the publishing and printing industry to experience bankruptcy, full disappearance of the independent theatres and plays, painting, and music as well as other thought, culture and art creation fields while adding the pressures on the writers and translators who depend on the publication of their works for a living.” (ILNA 2006/8/18).
43- Ms. Lili Golestan, the translator, is quoted saying “Deaths of
books have started in our country, due to the conditions introduced by the
Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. Supposedly, we should expect deaths
of writers.” She added” The Conditions of the issue of permits and
acknowledgements (of receipt) of books have grown very deplorable in our
country. Whoever you see is standing in line to get the permit or receipt of
his/her book. And yet the permits of many books, published years ago, get
cancelled. When the permit of a book is revoked after 25 years, and nobody is
responsible, what can be done?” (ILNA

45- Dr.Gholam-abbas Tavassoli, member of the Central Council of the “Nehzat-e-Azadi-e-Iran” (The Liberation Movement of Iran) was interrogated by the Branch No.5 of the Government Employees Courthouse due to a complaint filed by the Guardians Council, for the following charges: propagation against the regime and publication of lies.(ILNA 2006/8/8)
46- Khosrow Seif, the Secretary General of “Hezb-e-Mellat-e-Iran” (The Party of the Nation of Iran) was summoned by the Ministry of Information and questioned for a few hours. During this interrogation, he was seriously warned that he had crossed the red line of the government in his expressions and statements and he shall be treated judicially, if he continues to do so. 47- Dr. Mohammad Reza Khatami, Member of the Central Council of the “Jebheh-ye-Mosharekat-e-Iran-e-Islami” (The Participation Front of the Islamic Iran), and Tehran Representative in the 6th cycle of the Islamic Consultative Assembly , was interrogated by the Branch No.6 of the Government Employees Courthouse due to participation in the sit-in of the representative member of this assembly.(ILNA 2006/8/8).
48- Mohsen Armin, Member of the Central Council of the “
Sazeman-e-Mojahedin-e-Enghelab-e-Islami-ye-Iran” (Islamic
Revolutionary Mojahedin-e) and Tehran Representative in the 6th
cycle of the Islamic Consultative Assembly (The Majles), was interrogated by
the Branch No. 1083 of the General Court of Tehran, presided by Judge Hossein
Hosseinian, due to a complaint filed by the District Attorney, for the
following charges: propagation against the regime, insulting the
authorities and distribution of lies for
the purpose of disturbing the minds of the public. These charges were made because
of his expressions of views and interviews with the following suppressed
periodicals: “Tavana”, “Jame’e-ye Madani”, “Nowrouz”, “Asr-e-Ma”, “and
Hayat-e-Now”. “Dowran-e-Emrouz”, “Akhbar-e-Eghtesad”, and “Khordad” as well as
the following unsuppressed periodicals: “Seda”, “Hambastegi”, and “Aftab-e-Yazd”
in the years 1378 through 1381(1999 through 2002/3). (ISNA 2006/8/16).
Trials of Political, Cultural and Social
Activists
49- Davoud Azimzadeh, Majid Pojouh-fam, Yashar Hakkakpour, Hamed Yeganeh and Alireza Hagh-ghi, who were arrested in the course of the popular protests of the month of Khordad (May 22 through June 21) of Maragheh, were tried in the first Branch of the Maragheh Revolution Court, due to a complaint filed by the District Attorney, for the following charges: propagation against the regime, participation in organizing an illegal group or band for the purpose of disrupting the security of the country, and instigating people, for the purpose of disrupting the security of the country. These suspects were freed from jail after a period of arrest, each with a 300 million Rials bail order. (ISNA 2006/8/6)
Political, Cultural and Social Activists-
Sentences issued by Courts
50- Akbar Khoub, an activist in the National Movement of Azarbaijan,
who had been arrested in the course of the popular protests in
51 – Abbas Pour-az’hari, a national/religious activist, who had been arrested in the course of the popular protests in Tabriz, and had been released from prison after 25 days with a 100million Rials bail order, was tried in the Branch No.110 of the Criminal Court of Tabriz, due to a complaint filed by the District Attorney, for the charge of disruption of order through participation in the protests of May 22, 2006. 52- Ma’soumeh Ka’bi and Sekineh Naisi were tried in the Special Prosecution Office of Ahwaz for the charge of action against the national security. These individuals were arrested for a month and then released from jail with a 1,000,000,000 Rials bail order. (ILNA 2006/8/4)
53- Borhan Divargar, one of the persons arrested because of the
gathering on the world labor day, in Sagh-ghez, was tried in the first Branch
of the Sagh-ghez Revolution Court, in absence, for the following charges:

Capture of Political, Cultural and Social
Activists
54 – Fallah Velayati, Farshid Salavati, and Loghman Salavati were arrested by the Security Forces after being beaten and harassed in the Salavat-abad village, a suburb of Sanandaj, and transferred to an unknown location. (Kurdistan Human Rights organization - RMMK 2006/8/4)
55 – Tens of student activists, who were on their way to Amol for
participation in the ceremonies in honor of Akbar Mohammadi, were arrested and
returned to
56 – Omid Abbas-gholi-nejad, the Public Relations Head of the “Jebheh-ye-Democratic of Iran” (The Democratic Front of Iran), on his way to Amol for participation in the ceremonies in honor of Akbar Mohammadi (died in an equivocal condition in prison), was arrested by the Security Forces, and transferred to cell No.209 of the Evin prison. Previously, he had been jailed for 3 years in the Evin and Ghezel Hesar prisons. (Student committee of human right reporters 2006/8/10).
57 – Under pressure from the Security Forces, the ceremonies planned to take place in the Al Nabi Mosque of Tehran, in honor of Akbar Mohammadi (died in an equivocal condition in prison), were cancelled. Presence of security agents around the mosque was felt and 25 of the people who were going to participate in the ceremonies were arrested by the Security (Section) of the Information (Dept.) of NAJA (The Disciplinary Force of the Islamic Republic). Also, Akbar Mohammadi’s father and mother were interrogated by the Amol Information Dept. The Ministry of Information, in contacts with student activists, and organizers of the ceremonies, had threatened them by tough consequences and harsh treatment of the participants if the ceremonies were held. 58- Farzad Kamangar, a High School Teacher in the
59– Javad Tariri, the Defense Lawyer for a number of suspects in the

were each sentenced to 8 months punitive prison by the Branch No. 26 of the
Tehran Islamic Revolution Court, confirmed by the Branch No.36 of the
61– Payman Nowdinian, the Secretary of the Kurdistan Teachers Trade Association, and an activist in the Centre for Defense of Children’s Rights, was sentenced to 5 years living in exile in Kohkilouyeh and Bovir Ahmad Province, by the Sanandaj Court for trade activity for the purpose of changing the status of the cultural employees of the Ministry of Education and Development and the instructional regime. 62– Four Gonabadi dervishes were sentenced by the Criminal Court of Ghom to pay 3,000,000 Rials, as cash punishment, for disrupting order.(ILNA 2996/7/29)
63– Moslem Bavi, was sentenced to 10 years punitive prison, by the Branch No.103 of the Ahwaz Criminal Court, for the following charges: membership in an illegal association, action against the regime for the purpose of disrupting the security of the country, participation in propagation activity against the regime and in transportation, keeping and hiding of explosives. This suspect was 17 years old when he was captured. (ILNA 2996/8/1)
64– Khaled Ghassemi was sentenced to 5 years punitive prison and 2
years of exile to the
65 – Reza Safari, and Omid Karimzadeh, who were arrested in the
course of the popular protests in Oroumieh in the month of Khordad (May 22
through June 21 of 2006) were sentenced respectively to 2 and 3 years suspended
prison by the Oroumieh Court for the following charges: distribution of a declaration, and causing insecurity and
disorder. (Committee for Defense of the Political Prisoners of
66- Shahou Rahmani, , who was arrested in the course of the popular
protests in Sanandaj in the summer of 2005, was sentenced to one year punitive
prison by the Branch No. 101 of the Sanadaj Criminal Court for the charge of

67– Abbas Amir Entezam, Member of the Central Council of the “National Front of Iran”, who was on a medical treatment leave of absence, was sentenced to pay 3,000,000 Rials as cash penalty in lieu of jail for the charge of action against national security through propagation against the regime due to a complaint filed by the District Attorney. (ILNA 2006/8/8).
68– Sayyed Khalil Hosseini, Vahed Hormozabadi, Hassan Ghorbani, and Hossein Ghorbani, who were among those arrested in the month of Ordibehesht (April 21 through may 21, 2006) in the Sardasht County were, each, sentenced to pay 5,000,000 Rials as cash punishment after 3 months jail. 69– Kaveh Azad Lotfpouri, the Secretary of the “Shahou” Institute in Sanandaj, was sentenced to 2 years suspended prison by the Judiciary for the charge of action against national security.(Advar News 2006/8/13)
70– Kaveh Javanmard was sentenced to 5 years punitive prison, by the
second Branch of the Sanandaj Revolution Court, for the charge of action
against national security. Also, he was sentenced to 8 months punitive prison
by the Branch No. 103 of the Sanandaj Criminal Court for the charge of
destruction of public property. He was under arrest, for some time, in the
course of the popular protests of Sanandaj in the summer of 84 (2005). (Moukerian Web log 2006/8/14).
71 – Abdullah Mo’meni, the Spokesman of “central council of the Iranian Alumni Organization”, was sentenced to 5 years suspended prison, by the Branch No, 36 of the Appeals Court of the Tehran Province, because of protesting the sentencing of Dr. Hashem Aghajary in the year 81 (2002/3), for the following charges: action against the national security and holding illegal gatherings. 72 – Jalil Aghajani, was sentenced to prison for life by the Branch No.26 of the Tehran Revolution Court, confirmed by the Branch No.32 of the Supreme Court of Iran for the charge of action against national security through spying. (ISNA 2006/8/20).

Seyyed Mehdi Seyyedzadeh, a member of “The Pre-revolution Moslem Political Prisoners Centre”, who had been arrested 27 days ago, for the charge
of propagation against the regime, was released from the
74 – Khalil Bahramian, the defense lawyer of Akbar Mohammadi, one of the imprisoned students, who had been arrested in the course of the incidents at the Tehran University Place in the month of Tir, 78 (June 22 through July 22, 1999) and had been sentenced to 15 years prison, declared: “The authorities of the Evin prison advised “Since Akbar Mohammadi is on a foods strike, visiting him is prohibited. 75- Ahmad Batebi, one of the students arrested in the course of the incidents at the Tehran University Place in the month of Tir,78 (June 22 through July 22, 1999), who was on a leave of absence, was arrested again by the Security Forces and transferred to Cell No. 209 of the Evin Prison. 76– Isma’il Adib Hessami, Mousa Aslani, Ali Rasoul-nejad and Khaled
Choubineh, supporters of Ahmad Moftizadeh, were released from the Boukan prison

According to Mrs. Shadi Sadr who is the defending lawyer for Ashraf Kalhori, the stoning of her client is scheduled to be carried out in the next two weeks. Suspicious Deaths:
147- Akbar Mohammadi, one of the university students arrested in Tir, 1378 (June 22 through July 22, 1999) in the university dorm incidents of the Tehran University, who was at first sentenced to death and later his sentence was commuted to a 15-year punitive jail term, died as a result of a hunger strike. 148- Akbar Mohammadi, through an open letter written prior the start of his food strike stated that “I have been imprisoned for a period of seven years and have endured various physical and psychological pressures. I am suffering from several ailments including disk damage related to the tortures I was subjected to, the likes of which were used during the Middle Ages, in the early days of my interrogations.” In another part of the letter he states, ”During the past one month since I have returned to my cell, my repeated visits to the Jail infirmary to treat these ailments have been fruitless and I have repeatedly been confronted with negative responses, harsh language and insult directed at me. The authorities have prepared a death without dignity for me.” In the conclusion of the letter, he states “I have decided to fast indefinitely, starting on the first of Mordad (July 23) to obtain freedom so that I could be treated for my injuries and ailments, and to protest the systematic violations of human rights by the government of the Islamic Republic, and to obtain freedom for all political prisoners.
